Childhood (KiSS)

The Children's Sleep Training (KiSS) is a psychological intervention project of the University of Bielefeld for the examination and treatment of children with sleep problems aged 5 to 10 years. The main goal is to reduce the extent of the children's sleep disturbance and the associated stress.

Evidence for sleep disorders in children

  • Difficulties falling asleep
  • Difficulties sleeping through the night
  • Child cannot fall asleep or stay asleep through the night without parents
  • Anxiety in bed
  • Refusal to go to bed at appropriate times
  • Night waking
  • Nightmares
  • Early morning awakenings

Symptoms have been present for at least 1 month.

If one or more of these issues apply to your child, he or she may be suffering from a sleep disorder.

Content

At the beginning of the treatment, a detailed assessment is made to determine the factors that have contributed to the development and maintenance of the sleep disorder.

This is followed by group training. This consists of 3 group sessions for the parents and 3 group sessions for their children.

Treatment scale

The program includes a preliminary appointment for detailed diagnostics. This is followed by the treatment and a debriefing appointment. After three months, another debriefing appointment takes place, which on the one hand serves as scientific proof of the success of the treatment and on the other hand offers parents another opportunity to discuss the current status. The appointments take place by personal arrangement.

At the initial consultation and at the follow-up examinations, you will receive various questionnaires related to the sleep behavior and associated behaviors of the child and parents. We ask you to fill these out carefully. In addition, we will ask your child to participate in a short test of attention and concentration skills.

Participation in the training is free of charge for you and your child. The costs for the diagnostics are usually covered by the german health insurance companies. Therefore, please bring your child's health insurance card to the diagnostic appointments. It is also essential that you complete the questionnaires at all examination times!

Children aged 5-10 years who have been suffering from symptoms of a sleep disorder for at least one month, as well as their parents, can participate.
